If you are considering getting braces to straighten your misaligned teeth, you may want to consider the Damon System.

While only an orthodontist can assess the best method to straighten your teeth, Damon braces can correct many dental issues — similar to traditional braces — making most people good candidates for this popular treatment.

So, what are Damon braces, exactly?

DAMON BRACES VS. TRADITIONAL BRACES

Damon braces straighten teeth a little differently than traditional braces.

All braces use archwires and brackets to move your teeth. But while traditional braces have elastic bands surrounding each bracket, Damon braces feature a self-ligating system — similar to a door mechanism that is opened and closed — to connect archwires to brackets, instead of elastic ties which are common with traditional braces. This sliding mechanism makes the movement of your teeth more gradual and natural.

BENEFITS OF THE DAMON SYSTEM

The Damon system isn’t new, but it has grown in popularity as it can provide many patients with numerous benefits over traditional braces:

The Damon System can be used to treat even the most severe of orthodontic conditions, including extreme tooth crowding.

  • The gradual shifting of Damon braces creates less pressure and friction, helping wearers experience less pain and discomfort than traditional braces. The wires on Damon braces also use less force when shifting your teeth, which can also make them more comfortable to wear than traditional braces.
  • The more natural movement of teeth produced by Damon braces helps orthodontists create a fuller and wider arch compared to traditional braces. This can often be achieved without the need for removing any of your teeth or requiring you to wear expanders.
  • Traditional braces can get dirty easily. The material used to make them attracts bacteria, and food and bacteria can also get trapped in the small spaces between the ties and the brackets. Since Damon braces have fewer parts, they’re also easier to clean.
  • The elastic ties and bands common with traditional braces can loosen over time, requiring regular replacement. Not only do Damon braces not require ties or bands, they don’t require as many orthodontic visits and adjustments compared to traditional braces.
  • Damon clear brackets are virtually invisible, with only the metal archwire being noticeable. This more discreet design can help you feel more confident when you wear them.

DURATION AND COST

While the cost of Damon braces are approximately the same as traditional braces, the Damon treatment can be shorter — about 20 months.

Treatment with Invisalign® clear aligners can be even shorter than Damon or traditional braces — often ranging from 12 to 18 months — but it should be noted that Invisalign aligners may not be the most effective option for more advanced orthodontic needs.
